Speculation surrounding the future roles of Indian cricketing icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in T20Is has taken center stage since the culmination of the ODI World Cup 2023. With the T20 World Cup 2024 looming merely six months away, debates ensue regarding the duo’s potential participation in the upcoming mega event, fueling discussions on whether the team management will entrust young talent to end India’s decade-long ICC trophy drought.
Recent reports unveiled a significant discussion on Rohit Sharma’s T20I future during a pivotal meeting between the Indian skipper and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Delhi. The meeting, held to select the squad for the South Africa tour and review India’s ODI World Cup 2023 performance, witnessed Rohit Sharma raising queries about his inclusion in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.
According to Dainik Jagran, key BCCI officials, including Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Treasurer Ashish Shelar, along with head coach Rahul Dravid and selectors, unanimously supported Rohit’s leadership for the next T20 World Cup.
The collective stance emerged, advocating Rohit Sharma’s captaincy for the T20I side from the South Africa tour onward, though Rohit requested a brief respite from the white-ball leg post a taxing World Cup campaign, resuming to lead in a subsequent two-match Test series.
Significantly, the absence of both Rohit and Kohli in T20Is post-India’s disheartening defeat against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final saw Hardik Pandya take on the leadership mantle. However, Pandya’s recent ankle injury during the ODI World Cup 2023 raised doubts about his availability for the T20 World Cup 2024, prompting selectors to reconsider Rohit’s captaincy role.
In response, the BCCI and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) devised an exclusive 18-week program to expedite Pandya’s recovery and readiness for the impending World Cup. With only six T20Is remaining before the tournament, India aims to finalize their ideal playing combination across the remaining two series in preparation for the highly anticipated T20 extravaganza.
