IPL 2022: If he wasn’t keen on continuing, he won’t have taken back captaincy – Sunil Gavaskar on MS Dhoni

Former Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar reckons MS Dhoni will continue at Chennai Super Kings in the next season of the Indian Premier League. Dhoni has revealed that he will be back in the Yellow jersey in IPL 2023 but it remains to be seen whether he will play or he will take the job as a mentor.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja was given the captaincy onus by the franchise before the start of the season. However, Jadeja could not justify his role as a leader as CSK lost six of the eight matches in which he led. Thus, Jadeja decided to relinquish his captaincy duties and Dhoni once again took the leadership responsibility on his shoulders.

“I think he (Dhoni) said, ‘You will definitely see me in yellow’. Whether it’s a player uniform or another yellow, it remains to be seen. I do believe he will be around as a mentor. If he wasn’t keen on continuing, he would not have taken the captaincy back,” Gavaskar told host broadcaster Star Sports after the CSK-GT game.

“Sometimes you learn more from failures than from success. Maybe at that point in time with two more matches before Jadeja’s unfortunate injury, Dhoni would have given Jadeja a couple of matches to get that sort of experience. I do believe he will be back in yellow for sure. No question about that,” he further said.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has delivered the goods as a batter as he has scored 206 runs in 13 matches at an average of 34.33 and a strike rate of 128.75. However, CSK hasn’t been able to come up with a collective effort and it has led to their downfall.

On the other hand, CSK had posted 133 runs against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday. GT was able to chase down the score convincingly and won by seven wickets.

Earlier, Dhoni revealed he will be back in the Yellow jersey in the next season but didn’t reveal his role.

“You will definitely see me in the yellow jersey [next year], whether this yellow jersey or some other yellow jersey, that’s a different thing,” Dhoni told Danny Morrison.

CSK will play their last match of the season against Rajasthan Royals at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Friday
