Marcus Trescothick hails Shubman Gill, lauds his dedication, determination, fitness after twin centuries

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick showered praise on Indian captain Shubman Gill after his heroics against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Gill scored a fantastic knock of 269 runs in the first innings and then backed it with another brilliant innings of 161 runs off just 162 balls in the second dig.

Gill also became the first batter to manage scores of 250-plus and 150-plus in a Test. He became only the second Indian batter after Gavaskar to hit a double ton and century in the same Test.

Ergo, Gill’s twin centuries helped India register a mammoth win of 336 runs, which is their biggest away win. Furthermore, this is India’s first win at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Marcus Trescothick said on BBC Sport, “Well, I’m fed up of watching him (Gill) bat, really. As much as I like watching batters get runs. He has played brilliantly well, superbly well in both games, but in particular in this game here. Getting sort of 250 and then another 150, now that’s pretty special. The volume of runs, not many people have done that. So you’ve got to admire his dedication, his concentration, his fitness and his skill level to come out and do it.”

On the other hand, former England stylish batter Jonathan Trott also lauded Shubman Gill for scoring 430 runs in a Test match.

Trott said on JioHotstar, “I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings. I can’t recall him giving the English bowlers even a single chance. The way he shifted gears — hitting sixes at will — without slogging, just pure cricket shots, was something special.”

“Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four — almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don’t think he could’ve dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he’d have liked to win at Headingley, but now he’s hopefully set up a fantastic victory here tomorrow,” he added.

The third Test match between India and England will be played at Lord’s, London from 10th July onwards.
