Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has named Shubman Gill as the rising star of Indian cricket after the conclusion of the five-match Test series against England. Shastri said Gill will be around for a long, long time at the top level.
Gill was able to prove his mettle as a leader on the England tour as he scored 754 runs in five Test matches at a stunning average of 75.4, including four centuries. Gill’s tally of 754 is the highest by any Indian captain in a Test series as he broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 732 against the West Indies.
The right-hander was able to break many other records in the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy and played a key role in helping India draw the series 2-2.
Ravi Shastri said on Sky Sports YouTube Channel, “No question, Shubman Gill he’ll be around for a long, long time because we’ve seen what kind of series he’s had here. I think he’s only 25 years of age, and as you know, with this exposure, he’ll get even better.”
“He’s right up there. He’ll be up there. He’s composed. He’s very regal. He’s got that, you know, when you look at him, he’s something regal about him. The way he bats, he’s very easy on the eye, very fluent and has the ability to play the long innings,” he added.
Shastri rated Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes against Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup and when MS Dhoni smashed a match-winning six against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final, as his best moments as a commentator.
“I would say when Yuvraj Singh hit those six sixes and when Dhoni hit the six for India to win the World Cup at home at the Wankhede Stadium.”
