Rohit Sharma reveals the lowest point of his career

India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma had made his International debut back in 2007. It has been a wonderful journey for the Mumbai batsman in the last 13 years. As expected in a long career, a player has to go through the highs and the lows. When Rohit Sharma came on the International stage, he was deemed to be the next big thing in Indian cricket.

The right-hander had shown the skills of a match-winner and he is a treat to the eyes. However, the Mumbai batsman was not able to grab his chances. Rohit had developed a penchant of getting off to good starts but could not convert it into substantial scores.

Furthermore, the right-hander used to play a rash shot out of the box when there was no need for that shot. Consequently, Rohit was always in and out of the team as he was not consistent with his performances.

Subsequently, there was no place for Rohit Sharma in the 2011 World Cup, which was hosted by India. MS Dhoni-led side then went on to clinch the trophy and not being part of the Indian squad was a big disappointment for Rohit.

In an Instagram interaction with former England batsman Kevin Pietersen, Rohit revealed that it was the lowest point of his career. But Rohit also understands that he wasn’t at his best and thus was left out.

“Not getting picked for the 2011 World Cup squad, that was the saddest moment as it was happening in our own backyard, the final was played at my home ground,” Rohit replied.

“It was due to my performances, I was not at my best”.

However, Rohit was able to turn the tables and put up consistent performances after 2011. He was promoted as an opener in 2013 Champions Trophy by skipper MS Dhoni and it was a turning point in his career. Subsequently, he has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the limited overs format.

Rohit played 86 ODI matches from 2007 to 2012 and scored 1978 runs at an average of 30.43. From 2013, Rohit was able to turn the corner as he amassed 7137 runs in 138 matches at a staggering average of 59.47. The right-hander is the solitary International batsman to score three double ODI centuries.
