Shubman Gill becomes 3rd captain after Don Bradman & Sunil Gavaskar to score 4 centuries in a Test series

Indian captain Shubman Gill continues to break records in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar series. Gill scored 103 runs off 238 balls in the second innings of the fourth Test match against England at Old Trafford, Manchester with the help of a dozen fours.

This was Gill’s fourth century of the series and he became the third captain after Sir Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar to score as many centuries in a Test series. 

Gill had scored 147 runs in the first innings of the opening Test at Leeds, Headingley. The Indian captain then returned with scores of 269 and 161 in the second Test match at Edgbaston, Birmingham and thus aggregated 430 runs in the game.

Furthermore, Gill becomes the first cricketer from Asia to score 700 runs in a Test series played in England. Earlier, Pakistan’s flamboyant batter Mohammad Yousuf played four matches and scored 631 runs on the 2016 tour of England.

In fact, Gill is the first batter from Asia to score 700 runs in a Test series played in SENA countries. 

Moreover, Gill also broke Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record of most runs by an Indian batter in a Test series against England. Jaiswal aggregated 712 runs against England while playing at home in 2024. Gill has now amassed 722 runs in four Test matches at an average of 90.25 against England, with one Test match still to go.

Additionally, Shubman Gill has become the first Indian cricketer since Sachin Tendulkar in 1990 to score a century at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Meanwhile, at tea on the final day’s play, India were 322-4 and the visitors are looking good to get a draw.
