Legendary Sunil Gavaskar has shed light on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future and believes the duo might not play in the 2027 ODI World Cup after they announced their Test retirement. While Rohit called it a day from Test cricket on May 7, Kohli hanged his boots from the red-ball version on Monday.
Kohli amassed 9230 runs in 123 Test matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries whereas Rohit scored a total of 4301 runs, including 12 centuries in 67 Test matches.
However, Rohit has confirmed that he will continue leading the team in ODIs whereas Kohli will also continue playing in the 50-over version. The duo was recently part of India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign.
Sunil Gavaskar told India Today, “No, I don’t think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can’t drop them.”
The Little Master said the selectors must have had a word with the duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli regarding their Test future.
Gavaskar said, “That’s exactly what would have happened. There would have been discussions and conversations with them. They would have had talks with the selectors, chairman of selectors and senior board officials. That’s why I said this was not a surprise, at least not to me. Definitely, there would have been conversations with both of them because the one thing nobody would have wanted to see was them being dropped from the team. Nobody would have wanted that.”
Both Virat and Rohit will be seen in action in IPL 2025, which will resume on May 17.
