Suryakumar to lead T20I side in Sri Lanka; Rohit continues as ODI captain

Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka whereas Rohit Sharma will continue as ODI captain, the BCCI announced on Thursday. Hardik Pandya, who was expected to be India’s next T20I captain, has not been handed the leadership duty because of his injury concerns and workload management.

Pandya will miss the ODI series against the Island country whereas Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the whole tour. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were initially expected to be rested, have been included in the ODI squad.

But there was no place for Sanju Samson in the ODI squad while Abhishek Sharma could not make the cut into the T20I squad. Samson scored a fine hundred in his last ODI against South Africa whereas Abhishek scored a 47-ball 100 against Zimbabwe in the second T20I.

Shubman Gill, who led India to a 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe, has been appointed as the vice-captain for T20Is as well as ODIs.

Riyan Parag, who impressed in the Deodhar Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy, has been retained in the T20I squad whereas he also gets his maiden call-up in the ODI squad. Harshit Rana, who impressed in IPL 2024 for KKR, has been included in the ODI squad.

Shreyas Iyer, who could not get a central contract but led KKR to glory in IPL 2024, makes a comeback in the ODI squad. KL Rahul also finds a place in the ODI squad.

The first T20I between India and Sri Lanka will be played in Pallekele on July 27.
