Dilip Vengsarkar urges Yashasvi Jaiswal to curb his aggressive instincts ahead of 4th Test against England

Former Indian skipper Dilip Vengsarkar has urged Yashasvi Jaiswal to curb his aggressive instincts in the fourth Test match against England. While Jaiswal received a beauty in the first innings of the Lord’s Test, he played a poor shot in the second innings against Jofra Archer.

The Indian opener went for the pull shot against a delivery which was outside the off-stump and there is no doubt that it would have made more sense if the left-hander had looked to play it over the point region.

Jaiswal returned with scores of 13 and 0 in the third Test and thus failed to deliver. The southpaw has scored 233 runs in three Test matches at an average of 38.83 in the ongoing series against England.

“Jaiswal is a good player with a lot of potential, but he needs to curb his aggressive instincts at times. In Test cricket, you have to play each ball on its merit. A slight mistake and you’re out. Since his hundred, he hasn’t been among the runs, but consistency is key at the highest level. I expect a lot from him in Test cricket,” Vengsarkar said in an interview with RevSportz.

On the other hand, Indian captain Shubman Gill was involved in an altercation with England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett towards the end of third day’s play. Gill was dismissed after scoring six runs in the second innings but Vengsarkar denied that the altercation affected the right-hander’s batting.

“I don’t think so (Incident with Crawley affecting Gill’s batting). That incident was something Gill felt very strongly about and he made his feelings clear. But I don’t think it affected his batting at all. He’s a top-class player, and his temperament and skill level have been on display throughout the series. He played superbly at Headingley, and I don’t think the incident at Lord’s had an impact on him,” the former batter said.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja scored 61 runs off 181 balls but his efforts went in vain. Vengsarkar said Jadeja should have taken more risks towards the end.

“I believe we should have won the Lord’s Test. The team fought hard till the very end, but I feel Jadeja should have taken some risks. Of course, that’s something we can only say in hindsight. But if there had been one more partnership, I believe we would have won the game,” the former player said.

The fourth Test match between England and India will be played at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, from July 23 onwards.
