WV Raman defends Yashasvi Jaiswal, says it will be premature to be harsh on him after Lord’s Test

Former India women’s team head coach WV Raman has put his weight behind Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after the opener failed to deliver the goods against England in the third Test match at Lord’s. The left-hander returned with scores of 13 and 0 in the previous game.

While Jaiswal received a jaffa from Jofra Archer in the first innings, he played a poor pull shot against the same bowler in the second dig.

The southpaw has scored 233 runs in three Test matches at an average of 38.83 in the ongoing series against the home team.

WV Raman said in an interview with RevSportz, “I think Jaiswal has done well so far in his Test career. It will be premature to be harsh on him because of a couple of failures.”

On the other hand, Indian captain Shubman Gill returned with scores of 16 and 6 in the third Test after aggregating 585 runs in the first two Test matches.

Speaking on Gill, Raman said, “These were the same bowlers he (Gill) got runs against in the first two Test matches, almost 600 runs. I think we are reading too much unnecessarily. It’s just that he had a failure. He is good enough to score big runs in the remaining two matches.”

The former Indian batter said the visitors should not make many changes and they should look to alter the playing XI based on conditions at Manchester.

“Just because we lost at Lord’s, doesn’t necessarily mean we need to make changes. You only make a change when you think who is preparing hard and can add value to the team. As for changes in the XI, it will depend on the conditions. It is always better for the team management to take a call based on value addition rather than resorting to knee-jerk reaction,” said WV Raman (via the aforementioned source).

“Karun Nair has been given a fair number of chances. There might be a rethink about his place at Old Trafford.”

Nair has scored 131 runs in three Test matches against England in this series at an average of 21.83.

The fourth Test match between England and India will be played at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, from July 23 onwards.
