Jamshedpur FC goalkeeper Albino Gomes has set his sights on clinching the Kalinga Super Cup after quarterfinal win against NorthEast United FC at the Kalinga Stadium. The Red Miners won 5-4 on penalties after both teams failed to score in regular time.
Meanwhile, Gomes had a terrific run in the recently concluded ISL season, registering 102 saves, and thus became the first goalkeeper to have 100+ saves in an ISL edition.
The Men of Steel’s custodian has already bagged two clean sheets in the ongoing Super Cup and has played a key role in taking his team to the last four of the tournament.
“I was confident before the shootout, but I think my team helped me more.”
“They missed quite a few of their penalties, so I did not have to save much, but I’m very happy that we were able to win the quarter-final and are now just two matches away from winning the trophy,” Gomes said to aiff.com.
Gomes, who kick-started his football journey in Goa, said he worked hard on his skills to rise through the ranks.
“It’s similar. You need to be patient and keep working on the things you can,” he shared.
“I was the fourth-choice goalkeeper when I had just made it through the Salgaocar youth setup to the senior team. But I had to remain patient and bide my time. By the grace of God, that time did come,” he continued.
Jamshedpur FC will face Mumbai City FC in the semis on Wednesday and Gomes said they are taking one game at a time.
“We are taking it one match at a time right now. The semi-final is the most important thing for us at this moment,” he said.
“But our ultimate goal is, of course, to win the Kalinga Super Cup and qualify for the AFC Champions League Two next season,” he signed off.
