FC Goa midfielder Brison Fernandes said he needs to bring more consistency to his game. Fernandes was awarded Emerging Player of the Season in the Indian Super League. The 24-year-old scored seven goals and provided two assists in 24 matches for the Gaurs in the 11th season of the league and played a key role in taking the club to the playoffs.
After Fernandes impressed one and all, India’s head coach Manolo Marquez handed him a call-up to the national team ahead of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. The youngster made his debut off the bench during India’s goalless draw against Bangladesh.
“Given the performances (through the season), I was expecting a call,” Fernandes told The Times of India in an interview.
“I had mentally prepared myself. When I took the field, it was like a dream come true. Ever since I started playing football professionally, the dream was to wear the India colours,” he added.
Fernandes also received words of praise from veteran defender Sandesh Jhingan after he made his debut for the Blue Tigers.
“I felt good when Sandesh said it didn’t feel like it was my first game with the national team,” he stated.
The youngster said he still needs to learn a lot from his seniors and bring his best to the pitch.
“I have lots to learn from the seniors. I have to grow as a footballer and, more importantly, bring consistency in my game. Every game I play, I have to be top notch,” said Fernandes as he concluded.
FC Goa will take on Punjab FC at the Kalinga Stadium on Saturday.
