Harry Maguire Hopes to See Indian Talent in Premier League, Backs Grassroots Football Initiatives

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has expressed optimism about the future of Indian football, stating that he hopes to see an Indian player feature in the Premier League one day. However, the England international acknowledged that achieving such a milestone will require sustained efforts in infrastructure and grassroots development.

Speaking during the United We Play event at Mumbai’s Cooperage Ground on Thursday, Maguire praised the growing passion for football in India, despite cricket being the dominant sport. “I know cricket is a massive sport over here. It’s also a big sport in England as well. England and India have some great rivalries in cricket and have had some great matches over the years,” he said.

Maguire, along with Manchester United teammates Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot, interacted with young footballers participating in the grassroots initiative supported by Apollo Tyres. The programme aims to identify and nurture young talent by providing training, guidance, and exposure under the banner of one of the world’s most recognized football clubs.

The 31-year-old centre-back emphasized the importance of such initiatives in building a football culture in India. “Only initiatives like what they’re doing and giving these children good opportunities will help it go a long way and improve the game,” Maguire said.

He added that the love for football in India is evident through the country’s unwavering support for European leagues. “I know how passionate India is about football. I have spoken to a lot of people since I have been here and everybody watches the Premier League. It’s amazing that we have this support and I’m sure their football will keep growing.”

While interacting with the children, the Manchester United stars also took time to offer tips and encouragement, focusing on both skill and enjoyment. Maguire stressed the importance of joy and camaraderie in youth football. “It’s an amazing initiative to come here and to play with the children here today and just to see them enjoy so much because the most important thing as a child is to enjoy it and to feel sociable and to play with your friends.”

The Premier League star remains hopeful that India’s footballing journey is just beginning, and with the right support at the grassroots level, it could lead to significant achievements. “It’s great work and I’m sure it’ll continue and get bigger and bigger…” he concluded.
