One of the strongest things about FC Goa was that they signed some great players during the summer transfer window which included former Kerala Blasters man Alvaro Vazquez. The Spaniard with the wealth of experience came to India and had a splendid debut season netting eight goals and played a major part in the Blasters reaching the finals.
However now he is with the Gaurs and will want to have the strongest impact for them as coach Carlos Pena really liked him as a player as he enjoys getting involved in the build up apart from netting goals. Pena will hope that having a year under his belt, Vazquez will explode this season for FC Goa.
Recently the 31-year-old shared his thoughts on the league and his new club to the official league website. Speaking about the similarities between FC Goa and Kerala Blasters, he highlighted how both the teams like to play with the ball from the beginning. “There are similarities between both teams tactically- for instance, both teams like to play with the ball right from the beginning. FC Goa has always had a strong style with the ball, and we will try to be more aggressive up front,” Vazquez told IndianSuperLeague.com.
Then opening up more on his conversation with FC Goa coach Carlos Pena, Vazquez told how the Spanish tactician assured him that the style of play will be similar to what he experienced with the Blasters and that made Vazquez more comfortable and he finally decided to join the Gaurs.
“Before signing here we talked on the phone and he explained to me what he wanted from the team in general. He told me that his team’s philosophy would surely follow the line of last year, which helped me make up my mind in joining FC Goa because I liked their playing style,” the 31-year-old revealed.
Vazquez started slowly last season and then suddenly when he found his rhythm, he scored a lot of goals. His highlights reel from last season has a lot of crazy finishes, volleys. But when asked whether he would like to break last season’s record and score more goals, his answer was crystal clear.
“The team comes first, always. I like to think that we will lift at least two trophies this season, as we aim to challenge for the League Winners’ Shield, Hero ISL Trophy and the Super Cup. Helping the team to succeed is my primary objective.”
