Mo Salah and Liverpool: At the Threshold of a New Deal?

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool has been one of football’s hottest talking points in recent months. Speculation continues over whether the Egyptian star will sign a new contract at Anfield or take on a fresh challenge elsewhere. With his current deal set to expire in a few months, Salah has had the freedom to negotiate with other clubs since January 1. Saudi clubs have reportedly made staggering offers to lure him away, but he remains open to staying—provided Liverpool meets his demands.

The key issue in negotiations has been the length of the contract. Salah, who turns 33 in June, is seeking a long-term deal that would secure his future well into his mid-30s. Liverpool, however, are hesitant to commit to such an extension, mindful of how some elite players have struggled to maintain peak form as they age. From a business perspective, their caution is understandable. History has shown that many top players begin to decline after hitting a certain stage in their careers.

But Salah is making a compelling case that he’s an exception. With 22 goals and 14 assists in 24 Premier League games as of February 15, he’s arguably enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. His consistency, exceptional fitness, and ability to perform under pressure suggest he still has several years left at the highest level.

For months, Saudi clubs have been circling, eager to make Salah their next marquee signing. The financial offers on the table are reportedly astronomical, leaving Liverpool with a difficult choice: cash in on him now or risk losing him for free in the summer.

However, a recent hint from Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas, suggests that staying at Liverpool is still a strong possibility. His cryptic social media message praising new manager Arne Slot indicates that Salah is open to extending his journey with the Reds—if the club meets his terms.

For Liverpool, keeping Salah wouldn’t just mean holding onto their most lethal attacker—it would also send a message of stability. The futures of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also uncertain, and losing all three in a short period could shake the foundations of the team’s dominance.

As contract talks continue, Liverpool must decide whether to trust in Salah’s longevity or prepare for life without him. If his recent performances are anything to go by, the Egyptian King still has plenty left to give—and Anfield may just be the place where he continues to shine.
