Why Erik Ten Hag Dropped Cristiano Ronaldo From Manchester United’s Starting XI

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stint at Manchester United promised fireworks — and it certainly delivered, though not always for the right reasons. After a dream return in 2021, his time at Old Trafford took a dramatic turn under Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese superstar, known for his goal-scoring prowess and legendary status, found himself benched more often than not. But why exactly did Ten Hag choose to sideline one of the greatest players of all time?

The answer lies in a clash of styles and expectations. While Ronaldo’s talent is undeniable, his inability to adapt to Ten Hag’s high-intensity approach ultimately sealed his fate at United.

When Erik ten Hag arrived at Manchester United, he brought with him a clear vision — one built around energy, pressing, and fluid movement. His philosophy demands relentless effort off the ball, with forwards leading the charge in defensive pressure. Unfortunately, this was where Ronaldo’s style began to show its age.

Ronaldo’s brilliance has always been rooted in his finishing, movement in the box, and knack for delivering in crucial moments. But at 38, the physical demands of Ten Hag’s system proved difficult. The high press, a cornerstone of the Dutchman’s strategy, requires attackers to chase down defenders, disrupt passing lanes, and maintain constant energy. For Ronaldo, who had evolved into more of a penalty-box predator over the years, this approach didn’t align with his strengths.

Former United coach Benni McCarthy shed light on the issue, explaining that while Ronaldo might have been able to adapt this style earlier in his career, the years had taken their toll. “In his early years at Real Madrid, he was able to press and still have enough in the tank to score,” McCarthy noted. “But that wasn’t how Erik wanted to play. Having Cristiano in the starting XI just didn’t fit with the system.”

As the season progressed, the friction between player and manager grew. Ronaldo’s limited appearances — just four Premier League starts under Ten Hag — highlighted the growing divide. And while his quality remained evident, the lack of minutes took its toll on his morale.

The situation reached a breaking point with Ronaldo’s now-infamous interview with Piers Morgan. Candid and controversial, the Portuguese forward didn’t hold back in his criticism of the club’s direction and management. The fallout was swift and decisive — his contract was terminated by mutual consent, bringing an abrupt end to his second chapter at United.
