Kanika Siwach starred with a decisive brace as the Indian junior women’s hockey team registered a hard-fought 3-2 win over Uruguay in their second match of the Four Nations Tournament in Rosario, Argentina, on Sunday.
The thrilling encounter saw both teams exchanging leads before Siwach’s late heroics ensured India walked away with full points. With this victory, India bounced back strongly after their opening fixture and now looks ahead to a key clash against hosts Argentina on Tuesday.
Uruguay struck early, taking the lead in just the third minute when Milagros Seigal successfully converted a penalty corner. The early pressure from Uruguay set the tone for a high-tempo contest, forcing India to respond with urgency.
India found their equaliser in the second quarter, as Sonam netted a penalty corner in the 21st minute to bring her side back into the contest. However, Uruguay quickly regained the upper hand, with Agustina Mari scoring off another penalty corner in the 24th minute to restore their lead.
Trailing 2-1 at halftime, India pressed hard in the third quarter but could not break through Uruguay’s defence. It wasn’t until the final quarter that Kanika Siwach turned the game on its head. She first struck in the 46th minute, converting a well-executed penalty corner to bring India level again. Just four minutes later, Siwach produced a brilliant field goal to put India ahead for the first time in the match.
The Indian defence held firm in the closing moments, repelling Uruguay’s late attacks to seal the win.
Kanika’s performance stood out not just for her goals, but for her composure in a high-pressure scenario. Her efforts ensured India claimed their first win of the tournament, keeping their campaign on track.
India will now prepare for a tougher test against Argentina, who are playing on home soil and are expected to be strong contenders in the competition. With momentum now on their side, India will aim to build on this victory and continue their progress in the Four Nations Tournament.
