Sports Ministry Lifts Suspension on WFI, Lays Down Key Conditions for Governance

The Sports Ministry on Tuesday revoked the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), allowing the body to resume domestic tournaments and select national teams for international events. The decision marks a significant step towards normalcy in Indian wrestling after months of uncertainty.  

In an official statement, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports announced:  

 “In view of the findings of the Spot Verification Committee, the compliance measures undertaken by the WFI, and in the larger interest of Indian sports and athletes, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports hereby revokes the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) issued vide order of even number dated 24.12.2023 and restores its recognition as the National Sports Federation (NSF) for wrestling with immediate effect.”  

Key Conditions Imposed on WFI

While lifting the suspension, the Ministry has placed strict conditions on WFI to ensure transparency, fair governance, and compliance with the National Sports Code. The WFI must adhere to the following directives:  

1. 1. Reversal of Amendments: Any amendments made during the suspension period must be undone to restore balance among office bearers and establish proper checks and balances in decision-making. This process must be completed within four weeks.
2. Disassociation of Suspended Officials: Individuals who were not elected as office bearers, along with suspended or terminated salaried officials of WFI, must remain completely disconnected from the Federation and its affiliated units. The WFI Executive Committee must submit an undertaking confirming compliance within four weeks. Any violation will invite legal action under the Sports Code.
3. Fair and Transparent Selection Process: WFI must ensure that team selections for all international competitions are conducted transparently and in accordance with the Sports Code, as well as regulations issued by United World Wrestling (UWW) and other governing bodies.
4. Adherence to Governance and Athlete Welfare: The Federation must strictly follow the Sports Code, uphold principles of good governance, and prioritize athlete welfare policies.

Suspension Background and Government’s Concerns  

The WFI was suspended on December 24, 2023, after the Sanjay Singh-led panel won the elections on December 21. The government’s dissatisfaction arose primarily due to the Federation’s decision to host the National Championships in Nandini Nagar, Gonda—a stronghold of former WFI chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. The move was seen as an attempt to retain influence over the wrestling body despite Singh stepping down from his official role.  

With the suspension lifted, Indian wrestlers can now look forward to structured domestic competitions and fair selections for global events. However, the WFI remains under scrutiny, with the Sports Ministry making it clear that any deviation from the prescribed guidelines could lead to further action. The coming weeks will be crucial as the Federation works to meet the compliance requirements set by the government.
