Alejandro Tabilo shocked Novak Djokovic in the Monte-Carlo Masters by 6-3, 6-4 for the second-round win. Djokovic got off to a promising start against the Chilean as he broke his opponent’s service in the first game of the opening set. However, the left-hander was able to quickly bounce back as he broke Djokovic’s serve in the next game.
The left-hander then broke the Serbian’s serve once again in the sixth game of the opening set. This was Tabilo’s second win against Djokovic and his first win against the champion athlete came in 2024 in Rome.
“It has been a tough year, so a little bit of the nerves were there,” said Tabilo, who has now earned four Top 20 wins. “I remembered last time what I did well and thankfully I served well today and it helped me a lot. It was an unreal match.”
On the other hand, Djokovic admitted he could not bring his A-game to the court and rated his performance as horrible.
“I expected myself at least to have put in a decent performance. Not like this. It was horrible,” Djokovic said. “I did not have high expectations. I knew I’m going to have a tough opponent and I knew I’m going to probably play pretty bad. But this bad, I didn’t expect.”
Djokovic committed 29 unforced errors and he was not happy with his level against Alejandro Tabilo.
“I was hoping it was not going to happen, but it was quite a high probability I’m going to play this way. I don’t know. [It was] just horrible,” said Djokovic.
“A horrible feeling to play this way, and just sorry for all the people that have to witness this.”
Alejandro Tabilo will next face Grigor Dimitrov in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday.
