World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz registered a 6-4, 6-4 win against Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic in the third round of the ongoing Cincinnati Open. This was Spaniard’s 50th win of the ongoing season and his 13th consecutive Masters 1000 win.
With this win, Alcaraz became the first man to post 50+ tour-level wins four season in a row since Novak Djokovic 2013-16.
“I know he’s a really powerful player,” said Alcaraz. “His shots are incredibly hard to return. He has a big serve also. I know he doesn’t like to run too much from side to side, so my plan was to make him run as much as I could.
“It was difficult because his ball flies and it comes really fast, but I’m just glad that I did it most of the time, tried to defend in a good way. I’m just really happy to get the win.”
Alcaraz will next face Luca Nardi in the round of 16 at the P&G Center Court on Wednesday. The Spaniard has a 1-0 record against the Italian.
On the other hand, Taylor Fritz defeated Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(4), 7-5 in two hours and eight minutes on Monday. With this win, the American improved to 6-2 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series against the Italian. Fritz didn’t face any break point against Sonego.
”I was looking for that break the entire match today,” Fritz said. “I wish I could have gotten it done in the first, when I had a couple of chances. But there’s a lot of scoreboard pressure at the end of the sets, and that’s where a lot of times I am finding that break.”
Fritz will face France’s Terence Atmane in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
