Russia’s Daniil Medvedev said he has let himself down after getting knocked out in the quarter-final against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The 25-year old Russian lost in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 against Pablo Carreno Busta and thus ended his journey in the Tokyo Olympics. The game lasted for one hour and 44 minutes and clearly once again the weather factor came into play as Russian apparently struggled in humid conditions.
In the post-match presentation, Moscow born Medvedev said he tried to play his best game but could not play it at all. “I am always trying to do my best. I couldn’t play better than what I did today. I could serve better, but then I was wet like hell. I couldn’t toss the ball well, once I tossed the ball and got water in my eyes”, says Daniil.
The Russian also admitted how he feels disappointed after letting his country and fans down. “It was not easy to play and I’m really disappointed with myself and for my country to lose in the quarters”, further quotes Daniil.
He added that tried to change sweaty clothes but nothing went his way on a day full of struggle. “I changed everything I had (clothes). I wanted to change my skin because I was sweating like I never did before. It was terrible”, says Medvedev.
Medvedev never managed to bring his best performance. World no. 2 Daniil Medvedev managed to win over Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the round of 16 only by the skin of his teeth. The 25 year old Russian struggled against high humidity in that game in which he almost fainted and had to take timeout to beat the heat of the capital of Japan. He was so much disturbed by the heat in his round of 16 game that his trainer had to intervene more than once.
