Jannik Sinner cruises to 2nd round at US Open

World No.1 Jannik Sinner had no difficulty in beating Czech Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round of the US Open on Tuesday. The Italian took a 5-0 lead in the opening set to put himself in front.

Subsequently, the four-time Slam champion won the opening game of the second set, once again breaking Kopriva’s serve early. Sinner had the double break as he broke his opponent’s serve in the fifth game of the second set.

It was a similar story in the third set as Sinner continued his domination in the match.

“I feel in good shape physically,” Sinner said. “It has been some good practice days, especially the last couple. I feel physically in a good spot. Also it was a good first-round match, so I’m very happy.”

Sinner will face Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the second round.

On the other hand, World No.3 Alexander Zverev registered a 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

“It’s great to see the love for tennis in New York, every single year. It’s almost 1 a.m. and it’s a Tuesday, not a Saturday night… So thank you to everyone who stayed,” Zverev said in his on-court interview. “Coco had a fantastic match, so I would’ve probably gone home myself after that match!

“It’s great to start a tournament with a night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the biggest stadium that we have in the world.”

The German was able to save all six break points and also saved a set point at 5-6 in the second set. The lanky player was happy to go through to the second round with a straight-set win.

“It wasn’t great at times, but I won in straight sets and I’m through. It’s also very important that I finish at 1 a.m. and not 3 a.m., just looking ahead to the tournament,” Zverev added. “There is a lot to build on, a lot to improve, and I’m looking ahead to Thursday.”

Zverev will next face Jacob Fearnley in the second round.
