Jannik Sinner opens up on accepting doping ban for the first time

World No.1 Jannik Sinner has opened up on accepting a three-month doping ban. The Italian admitted it was a very difficult decision for him but he decided to choose ‘lesser evil’. Sinner maintained that he is innocent and would look to make a solid comeback on the tour.

WADA suspended Sinner from February 9 to May 4, which means he would be able to take part in the Roland Garros.

Meanwhile, trace amounts of Clostebol were found in Sinner’s doping sample. However, Sinner explained that it was due to a massage from a trainer who used the substance after cutting his own finger.

International Tennis Integrity Agency had accepted Sinner’s explanation but WADA was seeking to ban the Italian for at least a year.

“Accepting the suspension? I felt very comfortable. The decision to settle was very quick even though I didn’t agree too much. In the end we chose the lesser evil even though it was unfair but there could have been a greater injustice so that’s how it was,” Sinner said on Sky Sports.

“I was very fragile after what occurred, because many things happened including reactions from me that I did not expect. But in life you learn, year after year I know myself better, it was really difficult at times but the people close to me gave me the strength to understand and move on,” he added.

Sinner will make his comeback in Rome Masters and admitted it won’t be easy for him as there would be a lot of scrutiny.

“After the decision it took me a while to find myself again. Also because things happened outside this topic that were not easy. I still have to “digest” a little but I am looking forward to returning Rome. But it won’t be easy because there will be so much attention,” he said.

After serving his ban, Sinner will be able to take part in the Roland Garros, which will kick off on 25th May.
