Serve is the most important shot in my game, admits Alexander Zverev

The World no.4 Alexander Zverev has admitted that his service is the most important shot of his game. The German won his 2nd Round match against Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets. Zverev brought his A-game to the court as he comprehensively defeated the Spaniard by 6-1, 6-0, 6-3.

Zverev dominated the whole match and his serve played a key role in his win. The German smashed a total of 11 aces in the game, his first serve was 81%. Furthermore, he won 93% of his points on the first serve as he came up with his best.

Zverev won a total of 77 points and dominated the contest against his opponent. The 24-year old from Hamburg was delighted with his performance.

“My serve is kind of the key to my game,” Zverev said. “When it’s working I’m playing great. When it’s not, I’m losing matches like I did at Wimbledon… It’s no secret that my serve is probably the most important shot in my game, and I’m happy with how it’s working… The matches are not going to get easier and I will need that to be my weapon.

”I think it was always a problem of mine in the beginning of my career that I always spent a lot of hours, a lot of time in the beginning of Grand Slam tournaments. So it’s nice to have kind of two matches… winning [them] in straight sets.”

Zverev is considered as one of the front contenders to win the US Open after having lost the previous edition final against Dominic Thiem. The German is in fine form as he recently won Gold in Tokyo Olympics and then won the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, which was his fifth ATP 1000 Masters title. Zverev added that he is feeling confident after he defeated Djokovic in the semifinal of the Tokyo Olympics.

“The process started at the Olympics for me, and the match against Novak,” Zverev said. “That kind of started it off, because I was down badly, and I managed to win with great tennis.

“It was very important for me to kind of back it up in Cincinnati, because a lot of the times players that for the first time in their career win something really big like a Grand Slam title or a gold medal, they do tend to go downhill a little bit. So it was important for me to go to Cincinnati, to a place where I have never won a match before this year, and have a great tournament.”

Zverev will face America’s Jack Sock in the third round of the US Open.
